"Baude"
is the naming of those houses on the high mountains whose inhabitants live almost completely from cattle breeding. Therefore, there are Summer and Winterbauden; the first ones, inhabited by persons and cattle only in the summer, are lightly built, and are also named Futterbauden (Futter = animal food); however, the latter are firm and durably built, and contain inside large rooms because they are inhabited not only in summer but also in winter. Generally they are situated nearer to the valleys. The owner of such a Baude or hut is named the Baudenmann. Every Baude has almost generally its particular name, or several together a designation."

"
Friedrichsthal, a large village build by several groups of Bauden, i.e. the Spalte-, Krause- and Ochsenbauden on both banks of the Elbe, and 1 1/2 miles north of Hohenelbe, with a border customs house and an iron hammer. This place is a central point for hikers through the Giant Mountains because one can visit the most important subjects in the area in one day. One finds good lodging in several Bauden, as well as with the baker, hunter and shopkeeper ."
